Parent Guidance: Supporting the Support System
While therapy with your child is a wonderful outlet and tool, it is the small moments at home that can have a big impact. When parents feel prepared and have a consistent, informed approach to setting guidelines and navigating challenges, a child feels contained and safe and therefore more calm and capable. It is especially effective when the parent’s approach is streamlined with the therapeutic goals of the child. That’s why parent sessions are often just as critical to a treatment plan as the child’s own counselling.
Often, however, parents feel stuck or unsure on how to navigate tough moments. Parents may not be in sync with each other, one may choose a more tough love approach while another feels too much empathy and unable to hold firm. Where is the right balance? How can parents stay calm when their child is not?
Why Parent Guidance Makes Such a Difference
When your child is struggling, individual counselling gives them space to reflect, process, and learn strategies to manage their thoughts and feelings, real tools that can stop a current struggle from growing into a bigger one. But therapy sessions are just one hour. The rest of the week, it’s you navigating the ups and downs, often in real time, often without a script.
Parent guidance exists to change that. When you understand the theory behind your child’s struggles and learn how your day-to-day responses shape their progress, you become part of the treatment, not just a bystander to it. And when home life is genuinely in sync with the work happening in sessions, the results multiply. This matters at every age, but it’s especially powerful for younger children, who rely so heavily on their parents to help them make sense of big feelings.
Parent guidance is flexible to what your family needs, it can complement your child’s individual therapy, happen as part of family sessions, or stand entirely on its own.
What We Can Help With
Our therapists support parents with the everyday friction points, such as homework battles, screen time limits, curfews, and the particular challenges of parenting teens. Outside of these moments, parent guidance helps inform parents on how to best support a child’s mental health and to strike that balance of support and motivator. When parents feel prepared and confident, that confidence becomes something your child can lean on. It’s often the difference-maker.
A Note on Coverage
Many insurance plans recognize this value too and cover parent sessions focused on your child’s goals and strategies. It is worth checking with your provider or speaking with our Family Coordinators to plan the best use of your insurance coverage.
